Kiir appoints new Water Minister to replace late Manawa

President Salva Kiir has appointed Pal Mai Deng as the new Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation to replace the former Minister Manawa Peter Gatkuoth.

In a presidential decree read on the state-owned television SSBC on Monday, Kiir appointed Mai, an SPLM-IO nominee – months after the late Manawa passed away in Egypt.

“The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation welcomes and do hereby acknowledge his well-deserved appointment,” reads a short statement from the Ministry.

The newly appointed minister, now awaits his oath of office.

He served as an SPLM-IO commissioner for Walgak County, an administrative locality that the former opposition movement created in Upper Nile State. He was also appointed as Deputy Governor for Bieh State, and later became an Acting Governor.

Former Minister Manawa Peter Gatkuoth died in June 2022 at a Cairo hospital after undergoing an unsuccessful operation.

President Kiir remembers Manawa as a leader of his own for the role he played both in youth movement and the political scene.
