President Kiir appointed Lilly Adhieu Martin Manyiel Ayuel as the new Presidential Press Secretary on Friday evening.

In a presidential decree read through South Sudan Broadcasting Cooperation and seen by Eye Radio, Adhieu was decreed-in as the first female press secretary in the office of the president since independence.

She replaces longtime predecessor Ateny Wek Ateny who was sacked earlier in July, leaving the position vacant for more than two months.

“It is an honor and privilege to serve in this important office. I hope, I will be of great service to office of the President, the team and South Sudan as a whole,” said Lily on her official Facebook page following her appointment.

“To my fellow South Sudanese, with this position, I hope to be the bridge between you and the office of the President.  My office will be committed and dedicated to serve you to my fullest capacity. Last but not least, I hope this will be a new start between the press unit and the citizens of South Sudan,” she added.

Ex-Presidential Press Secretary Ateny Wek Ateny, who served in the Office of the President as Press Secretary since 2013 was fired by Kiir in July without reasons related to his dismissal and with no immediate replacement.

Ateny was a political commentator of the now-defunct Citizen Newspaper, and a former vocal critic of Kiir’s government before he was appointed in 2013.

He later became a strong pillar in the system, and was famous for defending the government against international disparagement.
