Employees of the Kenya Commercial Bank insist that they will not end their pay strike and return to work immediately as directed by the ministry of labor.

At least 300 workers went on strike on Monday, demanding a pay rise of 600 percent in line with the devaluation of the pound.

They said bank made the adjustment for Kenyans but failed to do so for South Sudanese.

On Tuesday, the bank managing director, Harun Kibogong, told Eye Radio that he had received an order from the ministry, declaring the strike illegal.

Mr Harun then asked the employees to resume work immediately. Those who would fail to report to work would face disciplinary measures.

“We are still insisting on the point that: why our salaries have to be increased by 200% while our counterparts who are Kenyans get 600%,” said Anagalaf James Oriho, deputy chairman of the National Staff Association

So we are still on strike within Juba and all over the country because we cannot be treated differently at the same house when the devaluation happened; it has affected everybody.”

Mr Oriho added that they’ve written to the ministry of labor about other issues that were not presented by the bank management. These include equal rate of pay rise among the employees.
