The Governor of Yei River State says calm has returned to Kajo-Keji County, where more than 30 people were killed in a clash at a remote village last week.

Gunmen under the leadership of one Franc Matata attacked military bases in Nyepo Payam last Friday.

Mr Lokonga says 34 people were killed on both sides, mostly the attacking soldiers, while civilians were forced to flee their homes.

He told Eye Radio that the area has been calm since the army repulsed the attackers and the displaced people are now returning to their homes.

“The commander, the local authorities and the religious leaders are appealing the people to return. We are sending people to talk to the people that peace has returned to Nyepo and Kansuk and as a Governor, I have sent a delegation with a support in terms of food,” Mr Lokong’a.

Mr Lokonga has also appealed to humanitarian agencies to assist the displaced people.
