Justice minister urges citizens to respect human rights

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs is calling on South Sudanese to respect human rights especially the rights of women and children as enshrined in the constitution.

Justice Ruben Madol was commenting on the recent incident of an 18-year-old girl who was blinded by her father in Tonj East County of Warrap state.

Ruben cited the two heinous crimes committed against children in Juba and Aweil of Northern Bahr el Ghazal.

On 1st August 2020, three siblings were killed at Rock City in Juba.

The convict was later hanged to death after he was found guilty of the crime by a court in Juba.

In May last year, a five-year-old girl was also molested and murdered in Aweil town of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.

The accused was later condemned to death by hanging.

Reacting to such crimes, justice minister Ruben Madol called for respect for human rights as stipulated in the Interim constitution.

“The Ministry of Justice is required by our constitution to protect the human rights of everybody, more particularly, the most vulnerable people of South Sudan. ,” Justice Madol said.

“It is our national obligation as South Sudanese in our various backgrounds to uphold the values of humanity,

“We have an elaborate chapter on human rights in our constitution which stresses the rights of the child, and the rights of the woman, against torture. On top of rights is respect for life and dignity.”
