Justice Minister Ruben tables peace roadmap bill in parliament

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs has presented to the national legislature a bill to amend the interim constitution to extend the peace agreement for another 2 years.

In an ordinary sitting  on Wednesday, Justice Ruben Madol tabled a bill titled: “The agreement on the road map to a peaceful and democratic end of the Transitional Period of the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan.

It is meant to extend the life of the unity government from the 22nd of February 2023 to the 22nd of February 2025 before general elections are held in December 2024.

The bill is also to amend some articles and chapters in the revitalized peace agreement to be incorporated into the constitution.

This will include the duration and term of the transitional national legislative assembly to run concurrently with the unity government as per the terms of the roadmap.

For the urgency of the bill, the Minister of Justice asked the legislators to enact the amendment within the shortest time possible.

Speaking after the Wednesday presentation, the Speaker of the Parliament, Jimma Nunu Kumba referred the bill to the Committee on legislation and Justice to study.

Kumba asked the committee to report back to the house on Monday next week.
