Juba, Khartoum to discuss ties in a Russia-hosted forum

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the government is using a forum hosted by Russia to address outstanding issues with Sudan.

These include the status of Abyei region, freedom of movement for citizens, border demarcation, and accusations of support to rebels.

Last month, Moscow hosted talks between the foreign minister of South Sudan, Barnaba Benjamin, and his Sudanese counterpart, Ibrahim Ghandour.

The spokesman for the ministry of foreign affairs, Mawien Makol, says the two-day meeting discussed issues in the cooperation agreement.

Mawien told Eye Radio that the forum is good for discussing bilateral relations between Sudan and South Sudan.

“This is a good forum and I think Sudan and South Sudan need to use it well so that they can be able to improve bilateral relations and work together to implement outstanding issues,” Amb Makol said.

Russia is one of the countries that opposed South Sudan sanctions proposed by the United States at the Security Council last month.

The forum is yet to be scheduled.
