Freelance Journalist and former director of South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) Adil Faris Mayath, has been released from detention after going missing for 12 days, his wife said.

Amira Al-Nahwi said in an Eye Radio interview that Mr. Faris was reunited with his family on Tuesday afternoon, adding he is in good health.

“Today, he was released in good health and condition. We thank the Almighty first and foremost. The kids are happy, we are happy, and so is everyone who was concerned. We would like to assure you that he is fine and in good condition,” she confirmed.

Ms. AlNahwi did not disclose which security institution or individuals were responsible for her husband’s detention or the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

So far, there has been no official statement from the relevant authorities regarding the matter.

Mr. Faris was reported missing in Juba on 23rd January 2025 – and the Union of Journalists of South Sudan said it acquired preliminary information that suggested he was taken to an unspecified custody over undisclosed reasons.

UJOSS “strongly” condemned the detention of the journalist without due process or notifying their families.

The watchdog further called on the entity involved in the detention to expedite investigations, grant him access to his family and lawyer, and adhere to the legal procedures outlined in the country’s transitional constitution.

The statement cited articles 12, 19, and 24 of the constitution that guarantee civil liberty, fair trial, and freedom of expression.

UJOSS also urged immediate dialogue with security authorities to address underlying concerns, with the Media Authority as a mediator.
