Jonglei teachers’ strike enters third week

Author : | Published: Sunday, October 23, 2016

Representatives of teachers in Jonglei state says all secondary and primary teachers are still on strike.

This is contrary to what the acting Minister of Education in the state said last week.

Angok Gordon had said the teachers called off the strike over a pay rise after they were promised an increment by the state government.

But in a phone interview with Eye Radio on Sunday, the chairperson of Jonglei Teachers’ Committee, Matiop Ruben, said they never arrived at a compromise with the ministry.

“When we talked with them [education ministry officials], they did not convince us,” Mr Ruben said.

“Unfortunately somebody went and said the teachers called off the strike and their problem would be solved.”

He added that they wouldn’t resume work until their demands are met.
