Jonglei teachers call off strike

Author : | Published: Wednesday, October 19, 2016

Teachers in Jonglei have called off the strike over pay rise after they were promised by the state government of an increment, an education official has said.

Angok Gordon, acting Minister of Education, says a decree to factor in the salary increment has been issued by the state leadership to be implemented with a new budget.

Mr Angok also said promotions for teachers will be considered when drawing budget for Education in the state in the fiscal year.

“When the budget is approved, yes the calculation will be added to the budget and from there the increment will take place,” he told Eye Radio.

However, a teacher at Bor A mixed primary school, John Achiek, told Eye Radio that although teachers have called of the strike, some of them have not reported to work.

“Some teachers still doubt. The government has been giving us empty promises,” Mr Achiek said.
