The government of Jonglei State on Tuesday threatened to dismiss some civil servants who have been absent from work while receiving salaries for months and years.

The absconding state workers have been handed a two-week ultimatum to report to work or else face dismissal.

State Minister of Information, Elizabeth Nyadak said some civil servants have not reported working for close to 3 years, yet they are on the government payroll.

Nyadak said the call serves as a reminder and warning to the unnamed employees before the government acts against them.

According to Nyadak, some of the employees are residing in the state while others are not.

“We need all our staff to report themselves to their workplaces. That is the reason we are sending the message to them, and this is the reason why we are calling them to come to work because your name cannot be there on the payroll while you are not doing the work,” Nyadak said.

She adds: “The government calls them back to work because we know what is work, duty is duty. When you are assigned to do something, you need to show up and you need to be serious about your duty.”

“We also want to know how many of them are residing in Jonglei state and how many are outside the State.”

The minister said despite numerous calls by the state Secretary-General for the last ten months, none of the individuals responded.

In a press statement issued last week, State SG Gatwech Koak Nyuon said the workers have until June 19th to report to work.

He said failure to do so, the government will apply the Civil Service Act, 2011 section 88(c) which mandates the dismissal of civil servants over an unjustified absence for a period of 21 consecutive working days.
