Jonglei governor asks MPs to preach peace in constituencies

The governor of Jonglei State has called on the state parliamentarians to promote peace and reconciliation among the communities.

John Koang says implementation of the peace agreement is a priority and urged the MPs to spread peace messages across the state.

“I request members of this August house to…enlighten citizens of Jonglei state wherever they are in order for peace to prevail,” Governor Kong told the MPs at the opening of the state assembly after four-month recess.

“People must be educated on the dangers of war and benefits of peace.”

Jonglei State Assembly Speaker Peter Deng Aguer says peace conferences will be held in Ayod, Uror, Duk, Twic East, and Bor counties to sensitize the citizens on peace.

“Community sensitization at grass roots level and peace building among the local citizens will be started in accessible areas, and peace conference between the affected communities of Jonglei state and Pibor administrative area to stop cattle raiding and child abduction is highly recommended,” Hon Aguer stated.

However, he could not point out when exactly the conference will commence.

Officials say the state assembly was scheduled to open on the first of October, but the opening delayed due to low attendance of the MPs.
