JMEC says civilians ‘suffocated in container’ in Unity

The Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission says both the government and the SPLM in Opposition violated the peace agreement five times in November and December.

These include looting of UN barges, raping of women and killing of civilians in Upper Nile and Unity States.

JMEC says the SPLM in Opposition looted the barges in Upper Nile State in November, and ambushed a vehicle on the 18th of December in Unity State, killing and wounding about 12 people.

It says the government was responsible for the killing of civilians in Unity State, where it says about 50 suffocated in a container on the 22nd of October.

JMEC says government forces were also to blame for denying freedom of movement to a monitoring and verification team in Western Equatoria on the 12th of December.

The incidents are part of a report presented to the African Union Peace and Security Council in Addis Ababa over the weekend.

Both the government and the SPLM in Opposition are yet to comment.
