JMEC Chairman, Festus Mogae said he will step down as Chairperson at the end of September 2018.

In a Press Release seen by Eye Radio, Mogae said he has written to the Chairperson of the IGAD Heads of State and Government, the Prime Minister of Ethiopian, Dr. Abiy Ahmed on his intention to step down next month.

“…as the process to revitalize the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan draws to a close, I have adjudged it appropriate to allow for the new phase of the transition period for South Sudan to be in fresh hands…”

The statement stated that Mogae will address the subject publicly in due course.

In June 2017, the former Botswana President recommended the revitalization of the agreement to the IGAD Heads of State and Government during their 31st Extra-ordinary Summit on South Sudan.
