Japan International Corporation Agency has distributed non-food items to more than 20,000 Abyei internally displaced persons in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.

This is according to the Chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.

Dut Majokdit says there are 17,000 IDPs in different parts of the state including Akong, Malual-Baai, Ageryel, and Bothyaar in Aweil East County.

The other 3,200 IDPs are Warcum of Aweil Center.

Majokdit says they have distributed blankets, sleeping pads, and water tanks, which were donated by JICA through the national government.

“We received a few items of sleeping mats, blanket, purifiers and water tanks, we received them from the national government through the RRC which is the support from the Japanese government and we have decided to give them to the IDP’s who have been displaced by the conflict,” said Majokdit.

The official says his office will continue to engage humanitarian agencies to support the Abyei IDPs.

“I would like to appeal to whole humanitarian operating in the countryside and also in particular in Northern Bahr El Ghazal state to continue supporting these IDPs that have been displaced from Abyei by the inter-communal conflict.”

Majokdit spoke to Eye Radio on Thursday after the distribution of the relief items in Aweil Center.

Inter-communal violence between the Twic and Ngok Dinka in Warrap, and the Misseriya raids on the border region, have displaced tens of thousands to Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.
