The Islamic Council of South Sudan has appealed to well-wishers to support a fundraising initiative to deliver humanitarian aid to the conflict-affected population in Upper Nile State.

Months of violence in the oil-rich northern part of the country has resulted in death of civilians, displacement of tens of thousands and loss of livelihoods, according to media and humanitarian reports.

The Secretary-General Dr. Abdallah Baraj Rwal Rout encourages the public to contribute material or financial support to the displaced persons.

The religious group has formed an emergency committee, which must be responsible for receiving and keeping the support – in a span of two months to generate humanitarian needs from food, clothing, and shelter.

In a press conference in Juba on Monday, Abdallah says the committee formed already has donated 2.5 million pounds and has asked well-wishers to join the initiative.

“The Islamic council is appealing to all well-wishers organization business people and companies and government we have to put our hands together and give as quickly as possible to the people in need,” he said.

“They are in camps now without food. They also need shelter or tents because their homes were burned down, they also need clothing.”
