Islamic Council donates food aid in Juba. (-)
The South Sudan Islamic Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, distributed 35 tons of food items to 700 vulnerable individuals in Juba on Saturday.
The Secretary General of the Islamic Council Sheik Dr. Abdallah Baraj Rwal, said the benefices including the elderly, widows, children, and people with special needs received wheat flour, rice, and oil.
This is part of nearly 1,000 tones of emergency food assistance donated by China to South Sudan to support displaced persons due to floods, and Sudanese refugees and returnees who recently fled the ongoing conflict in neighboring Sudan.
“In collaboration with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, we are distributing about 35 tons of food supplies to more than 700 families of the needy, including the elderly, widows, children and people with special needs in the country,” Baraj said.
He encourages South Sudanese citizens to focus on agriculture as a mean of combating hunger and reducing dependency on aid.
He also called on the government to establish lasting peace in the country to address the root causes of food insecurity.
“The Chinese government has donated food supplies and we will distribute food here at this center. I appeal to the citizens of South Sudan to turn to agriculture to combat famine instead of relying on aid. We appeal to the government to establish peace.”
