Over 120,000 Internally Displaced Persons in the oil-rich Unity State have expressed disappointment over the suspension of food ratios by the World Food Programme.

This is according to Peter Machot, a youth leader at the camp.

Last week, the UN’s food agency WFP suspended the aid to the displaced persons.

This sparked an outcry, leaving the IDPs in dire humanitarian conditions.

The displaced went on a peaceful strike to air out their frustration with the move.

IDP Machot is now appealing to Unity State government and aid agencies to continue supporting them.

“The protest was about food because we were told that, our seven months of food distribution had come to an end. Since most of you,” Peter told Eye Radio.

“Our surrounding areas at the civilians’ protection sites are submerged by water, making it impossible for cultivation. So that’s the problem,”

“People are dying of starvation in hospitals and homes. That’s why youth mobilized themselves and protested to show their unhappiness against the decision to cut off the food ratio,”

“Non-governmental came to calm us down and promised to look into some of our pressing issues and make their decision public later.”

When Eye Radio contacted the national minister of humanitarian affairs and disaster management, Albino Atak said his office is discussing the matter with the UN agencies.

According to a UN report, there are 128,000 IDPs in Bentiu and more than 7,000 returnees who fled clashes in the neighbouring Sudan.
