The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has called on warring parties to allow unrestricted passage of humanitarian assistance to civilians and those wounded in ongoing conflicts in parts of the country.
In a statement issued on Thursday afternoon, the ICRC said armed conflict has intensified since late 2025 and early 2026 in several areas, including Jonglei, Eastern Equatoria, and Central Equatoria states.
Amid the escalation, the organization said medical and humanitarian workers are facing serious challenges in reaching the wounded and the most affected communities.
Daniel Bunnskog, the head of the ICRC delegation in South Sudan, said restrictions in areas heavily affected by violence mean that people wounded by weapons are unable to receive the help they need.
Bunnskog appealed to the parties to the conflict to facilitate the rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian aid to civilians in need and those wounded by weapons.
The ICRC also called on the parties to clearly distinguish between civilians and those directly taking part in hostilities, as well as between civilian objects and military objectives.
The organization said it will continue providing neutral, impartial, and independent humanitarian support to people affected by the armed conflict in South Sudan.
