A religious leader in Tambura has reported that gunmen opened fire at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at St. Mary Parish, resulting in one death and leaving a mother and child wounded.
Rev. Santino Wais recounted that on Tuesday at around 6 pm, armed assailants entered the camp in search of the woman’s husband.
The church leader stated that when they could not find him, the gunmen shot and killed a man inside the camp, injuring both the woman and her child in the process.
The mother and child are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
“We were having our supper when we heard gunshots. We quickly ran out of the dining hall to our rooms,” Rev. Santino Wais told Eye Radio in Tamburo town.
“Hearing people crying, we went to see what had happened and found a man shot dead, with a woman and child injured,” he stated.
“The man had been shot three times and died on the spot. The mother and child are now in the hospital,” he said.
Rev. Wais also noted that, in the wake of the incident, many civilians have fled the camp in fear.
He is calling for peace and urging the community to remain calm during this difficult time.
“People are fleeing in fear, but I called them this morning and urged them to calm down and stop running away,” Rev. Wais concluded.
