Gov’t asks aid groups to support IDPs in Unity

Author : | Published: Tuesday, May 12, 2015

The caretaker-governor of Unity State has urged humanitarian agencies to provide assistance to people affected by the recent fighting in and around Bentiu.

Some aid agencies have pulled out from the area, citing security concerns.

Last week, both the government and the SPLM in Opposition forces reported clashes in Nhialdiu and Guit areas near Bentiu.

Mr Joseph Monytuil says several people have been displaced from the villages to Bentiu town.

“There is influx of IDPs from rural areas to Bentiu town and this has caused a very bad humanitarian situation that needs to be addressed quickly,” he told Eye Radio.

More than 300,000 IDPs in Unity State currently do not have access to life-saving assistance, according to the United Nations.
