Gov’t revokes expulsion of UN human rights officer

The government has revoked the decision by the Unity State government to expel the UNMISS state Coordinator, Mary Cummin.

It says this is because the state government does not have the mandate to expel UN officials or members of the diplomatic community from the state.

Early this week, Unity state government issued a statement warning Ms. Cummin not to return to the State capital, Bentiu.

The minister of Foreign Affairs is Dr. Barnaba Marial told Eye Radio that Ms Mary Cummin will go back to her duty in Unity State.

‘‘In fact the issue with the governor of Unity State, this is an issue which is can be handle by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we have resolved already she is not going to be expelled. Yes, she will be going back to Unity State but we will take up the issue with Special Representative of the Secretary General,” Mr. Marial said.

In statement, the South Sudan Embassy in Washington DC said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is engaged in consultation with government of Unity State and the leadership of UNMISS in order to resolve the issue.
