The government of South Sudan said on Tuesday that it objects to the renewal of the mandate of the UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan.

This comes after the rights body presented its latest annual Mandate Report to the Human Rights Council.

According to the report, civilians sheltering in makeshifts were also attacked and their food aid was looted in September 2022.

The report found in its latest report that impunity is a major driver of the human rights and humanitarian crises in South Sudan.

It says impunity continues to cause immense trauma and suffering for civilians in the country.

Responding to the report, the Minister of Justice said his government is objecting to the renewal “because the commission is undermining the sovereignty of South Sudan.”

“The government of South Sudan is objecting to the renewal of the mandate of the commission of human rights in South Sudan because the commission is undermining the sovereignty of South Sudan,” Madol said at the 52nd Session of the UN Human Rights Commission.

Ruben Madol Arol said UN experts also undermined the efforts of the government to implement the peace agreement.

“It also undermined the efforts of the government to implement the R-ARCSS, therefore the government of national unity rejects the extension of the mandate of the commission on human rights in South Sudan under item two but welcomes the renewal of the resolutions.”
