The government says the investigation into the role the 11 political detainees played in the alleged coup has been completed.

The 11 political detainees were arrested in December after they were suspected of taking part in what the government has described as attempted coup.

Earlier this month, President Salva Kiir instructed the Ministry of Justice to expedite the process of investigations for the suspects.

The government spokesperson, Michael Makuei Lueth, said yesterday that the Ministry of Justice has completed its investigation and presented its findings to the President.

“The meeting was briefed by the Minister of Justice on the progress he made concerning the detainees, whose problem has become a headache to us here in South Sudan,” said Mr Makuei.

“The Minister of Justice informed the cabinet that they have finished the investigation, and that they report to the President for further consideration.”

Last week, President Salva Kiir said he may be in a position to offer amnesty to the 11 political detainees once they have gone through the legal procedures.

President Kiir also said the suspects will participate in the planned national peace and political dialogue in the country.
