The Gender, Child and Social Welfare Minister says she is planning an event to celebrate International Men’s Day in the coming weeks.

“This year, the National Ministry of Gender, Child and Social welfare is involving men in the fight against GBV,” Minister Ayaa Benjamin Warille told participants during a Women Leaders Forum on Wednesday.

The day falls on the 18th of this month, a week before the 16-days of activism.

Ms. Warille said the event will focus on the role of men in society and in fighting gender-based violence in the country.

“In our plan this year, we will celebrate the [International] Men’s Day on the 18th of November and we have a day for men during the 16 days of activism just to talk about the role of men in society and in addressing GBV issues,” she said.

On Wednesday, a high court judge said Gender-Based Violence and sexual-related offenses are perpetrated by men against women with schoolgirls being most of the victims.

Francis Amum who presides over the courts said 110 people have so far been convicted of the crimes since the court was established nearly two years ago.

Amum disclosed this at the ongoing chief’s conference in Juba on the implementation of a strategic national action plan to end child marriage by 2030.

The International Men’s Day is an opportunity for people everywhere of goodwill to appreciate and celebrate the men in their lives and the contribution they make to society for the greater good of all.
