Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta says implementation of the peace agreement is the key to peace and stability in South Sudan.

This comes during the one-day visit to Juba.

President Kenyatta, who met President Salva Kiir this afternoon, encouraged South Sudan leaders to fully implement the august 2015 peace deal.

“We are here to give encouragement and support; we are here to say and to ask the government to push along the peace agreement and the reforms that were agreed to under that peace agreement,” Mr Kenyatta told the media.

For his part, President Kiir acknowledged the regional leaders’ efforts to end the conflict in the country.

“President Uhuru came to Juba as the first Head of State after our crisis,” President Kiir said.

“It shows that the regional leadership is with us, and they are very concerned about the situation of South Sudan.”

Mr Kenyatta, who was accompanied by his Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed, returned to Kenya this evening.
