Fourteen people have been killed and 35 others injured following inter-clan violence in Tonj North County of Warrap State.

The clashes broke out at around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, 7 July, in Alabek and Majak Payams, involving members of the Lou Mawien and Ariik clans, according to the Warrap State Government.

A statement from the state government says 13 people were killed in Tonj North, while another person died in Wau in what authorities described as an extension of the same conflict.

Among those injured was a woman, according to the statement.

Authorities say the dispute dates back to 2016 and is linked to disagreements over the naming of local administrative units.

Previous peace efforts, including community dialogues and the establishment of a special court to resolve the dispute, had helped reduce tensions.

However, the state government says some individuals continued to challenge the court’s decisions, contributing to the latest outbreak of violence.

The Warrap State Government has condemned the killings and vowed to hold those responsible accountable.

Security forces have been deployed to restore calm, while investigations into the violence continue.
