The former speaker of the national legislature says the root cause of ongoing violence in Tambura needs to be carefully studied.

Anthony Lino Makana urged the government to investigate the killings, displacement, and destruction of properties in the area.

Nearly 40 people have been confirmed dead and over 28,000 others displaced in Tambura County between June and August.

Weeks of fighting have forced mainly women and children to seek refuge in schools and churches in Tambura town, Nagero, Ezo, Nzara, and Yambio.

Most of them fled from Source Yubu, Akpa, Mabenge, Kpatanayo, and other locations in Tambura County.

State and county authorities have been trading allegations over who is responsible for the violent unrest.

Anthony Lino Makana who currently represents Yambio County in the reconstituted national parliament told Eye Radio: “we are getting conflicting information, but I think an independent group should be sent to the ground to assess the situation and come with a real report [on] the root causes of the violence.”

“…and the perpetrators are brought to answer. If they are brought to justice, this thing will stop,” he added.

On Monday, some women displaced by the violence in Tambura County said they are wondering why the national government is silent over the unfolding crisis.

The Office of the First Vice President said it does not have the necessary resources to initiate dialogue and restore peace in Tambura County.

According to Press Secretary in Dr. Riek Machar’s office, the violence in Tambura requires the collective effort of both national and state governments.

Puok Both also said there is no money to facilitate dialogue as agreed in July this year following a meeting with Western Equatoria state leaders.
