At least five thousand people have been displaced from Gondokoro and Mangala areas of Juba County due to the recent floods, a lawmaker in Central Equatoria State parliament said.
Honorable Edward Dial, who visited the area on Thursday, said torrential rains has caused massive flooding that washed away farms and destroyed houses across four villages of the two payams.
The displaced are currently sheltering in Ladu Payam of Juba County, the lawmaker said.
“People from Gondokoro and Mangala have all come to Jebel Ladu because the areas are flooded with water, we visited the area yesterday and the population there is really suffering,” Mr. Dial said in an interview with Eye Radio on Friday morning.
“The number of the people is five thousand and four hundred from four villages of Mangala and Gondokoro Payam. They are all here in Ladu Payam.”
The legislator is calling for urgent humanitarian assistance to the displaced persons, whom he said, are in dire need of food, shelter and medicines.
“These people are in dire need for food and shelter because some of them are now sheltering in schools or houses of their relatives. There is also urgent need for mosquito nets, blankets and medicines to treat disease in this rainy season.”
