Five South Sudanese students in Kenya – including one at Kakuma Refugee camp – have emerged among best performers with A plain grades in the 2024 Kenya Certificate for Secondary Education (KCSE) released on January 9.

Thon Gai Aguek, a student of Paul Boit High School at Kakuma refugee camp, was carried around in wild celebration by his colleagues after emerging as one of the best students, scoring an ‘A’ in KCSE results.

Mr. Gai said he was glad to be among Kenya’s best students, despite challenges of being a refugee from South Sudan and appreciated his parents and all those that supported him during the academic journey.

He hopes to pursue his higher education in Computer Science should he be favored with the opportunity.

“Although from South Sudan and despite the challenges I have passed through as a result of being from a refugee status, I have still managed to get this ‘A’,” he proudly stated in an interview with NTV Kenya.

“That is why I have to thank almighty father at every standard and every group who has been there to support me. It has not been easy to get this ‘A’ but I have managed it.”

“In future if I will manage to join university, I will happy to study Computer Science, that is my field I would hope to pursue in future.”

Other top performing South Sudanese in the A plain section are Adhel Bior Kongor from Makueni Girls High School, Lou Mayian Lul from St. Joseph Boys Secondary School, Adhel Garang from Bunyore Girls High School and Jak Panchol Ajak from Baringo High School.

Two other South Sudanese students Achiek Kur Achiek and Bior Chan Awan of Moi High School in Nakuru also scored A Minus (A-) in the secondary leaving exams.

The 2024 KCSE taken by 962,512 students saw a historic moment as female candidates outnumbered their male counterparts for the first time since the inception of the exam.

South Sudanese students in Kenya have been ranked among the top performers in the Kenyan Certificate of Secondary and Primary Education (KCSE/KCPE) in the recent years.
