South Sudan’s Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Kuol Nyok Kuol Arop, accompanied by Consul Ms. Pamela Albert, holds a cordial meeting with Ambassador Yasser Sorour of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 26, 2026.
A senior Egyptian diplomat in Cairo has assured that concerns regarding the South Sudanese community in Egypt will be formally raised with the Ministry of Interior for further review.
The commitment was made by Ambassador Yasser Sorour, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director of the Department for Sudan and South Sudan, during a meeting with South Sudan’s Ambassador to Egypt, Kuol Nyok Kuol Arop, in Cairo on Sunday, April 26, 2026.
The high-level meeting, which included South Sudanese Consul Ms. Pamela Albert, focused on recent enforcement measures impacting South Sudanese nationals. Ambassador Sorour clarified that current residency regulations are being applied to all foreign nationals living in Egypt.
He emphasized that all residents must obtain valid permits and comply with national laws. However, he acknowledged the specific difficulties currently facing South Sudanese citizens and promised to coordinate with the Ministry of Interior to address these issues.
The meeting follows growing concerns from Juba regarding the treatment of its citizens abroad. On April 22, South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs established a special task force to address reports of harassment, arrests, and forced deportations affecting its nationals in Egypt, Sudan, and Libya.
Ambassador Thomas Kenneth Elisapana previously expressed the government’s alarm over the humanitarian conditions of South Sudanese women, children, and students in these regions. The Ministry confirmed that some citizens have been forced back to South Sudan against their will.
Despite these challenges, officials described the Cairo discussions as positive and cooperative, reflecting the long-standing bilateral relations between the two nations. The new South Sudanese task force intends to continue using these diplomatic channels to stabilize the situation for its citizens and ensure their protection under international and local laws.
