EES to close down uncooperative national commissions

The Eastern Equatoria state says it may close down some of the national commissions if they do not involve the state government in their activities.

National commissions were set up to work on specific tasks by the national government.

This comes after the state government organized a consultative meeting between the national and state commissions today and only members of the state commissions turned up.

The Eastern Equatoria state Deputy Governor, Jerome Surur, said there are concerns that some national commissions in the state are not reporting their activities to the state, and it is not clear what they do.

“We don’t want people to work in our house without us knowing what they are doing; we want to know exactly what they are doing and they must be subjected to reporting procedures.

“I will ask the acting SG (Secretary-General) to get hold of them and if they don’t come, we will close down there commission,” said Mr Surur.

However, the chairperson of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration officer, Madam Hellen Lagua, refuted the claims by the state government.

She said national commissions deliver all reports of their activities that are meant for state government to the state authorities.

“We have got all the copies of our activities; we give him at list a copy there and right now I am in the field and we have even filed the copy of our field activities in advance,” she said.

“In the state, we are not on our own; we are directly answerable to the local government, and that is why we have our base office in the local government office.”

Eastern Equatoria State government holds periodical a consultative forum to assess the performance of State and national Commissions in the region.
