EAC membership, a ‘wrong decision’

Author : | Published: Thursday, March 3, 2016

The membership of South Sudan in the East African community will make the country a dumping ground for goods from the region, opposition leader Dr Lam Akol has said.

He says the decision was wrong, because it was not made to the advantage of South Sudan economy.

South Sudan was confirmed as a member of the East African Community yesterday during the 17th Ordinary Summit of the East African Heads of States in Arusha.

Mr Lam told Eye Radio that South Sudan will not benefit from its membership in the bloc because it does not produce any goods for export, but only imports from the region.

“This is a decision that is not based on any economic advantage, and it is unfortunate, so I think it is a wrong decision,” Dr Lam argued.

With the admission of South Sudan into the East African Community, the region’s market population is around 160 million people.
