Leaders of the East African Community are meeting in Arusha, Tanzania today to discuss ways of ending the conflict in South Sudan.

The 12th Extra-Ordinary Summit of Heads of State will look at the role of the East African countries in ensuring that the conflict in South Sudan doesn’t escalate to regional instability.

“The ongoing conflict in the Republic of South Sudan will feature prominently in the meeting,” Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is the chairperson of the bloc, wrote on twitter.

President Kenyatta recently said that the East African leaders will not ‘standby and watch’ as the conflict in South Sudan turns into a genocide –similar to the one in Rwanda 20 years ago.

President Uhuru Kenyatta said his goal is to use trade as an instrument of peace in Africa.
