Two people have been shot dead by a police officer in Tonj East County of Warrap state.

A woman was also wounded in the incident last night.

Warrap state Deputy Governor Akech Tong Aleu said the police officer, who was on patrol in the area, shot randomly in the street, killing the two civilians.

“There is a certain citizen from the community police who was drunk; he went and shot at people in the village,” Mr Akech explained.

“He was captured and has been arrested in Tonj East County, in an area called Marder boma in Ng’ab Agok Payam.”

Mr. Akech added that the proliferation of arms in the hands of civilians in the state is due to the conflict in the country.

He said the state government is working to reassure citizens that they are safe before it launches a disarmament campaign.
