Dr Machar returns home, finally

Author : | Published: Tuesday, April 26, 2016

Dr Riek Machar has returned to Juba for the first time since he fled from the violence in 2013.

According to Eye Radio’s Nichola Mandil, the plane carrying Dr Machar touched down at 3:45pm.

He is expected to proceed to the J1 (State House)  where he will be sworn in as the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan.

A Eye Radio’s Alhadi Hawari just confirmed that Chief Justice Chan Reec and President Salva Kiir are waiting for Dr Machar at J1.

His arrival follows several missed deadlines attributable to disagreements with the government.

This is a key part of the deal aimed at ending more than two years of conflict that has killed tens of thousands and left two million people homeless, the BBC reported.

Dr Machar fled Juba at the start of the conflict in December 2013.

He had been accused of trying to organize a coup, which he denied – but it set off a round of tit-for-tat killings, which developed into a full-blown conflict.
