Displaced Wau schoolchildren worried about their ‘future’

Children living inside Protection of Civilian sites in Wau say they are worried about their future because they are out of school as a result of insecurity in the town.

The internally displaced children say their fate is in limbo.

Many schools in Wau have been closed down as residents fled to the UN base and the compound of the Catholic Church for safety.

Eye Radio visited one of the POC sites in Wau and spoke to some kids there. One of them shed tears as she explained the conditions at the camp.

“In our area there, people are being killed. There are people who come and loot our things, they break houses and so we ran away,” said 14-year-old Nimat Bika Benjamin.

“Our future is in school, but we’ve wasted almost a year without school. I’m hoping that let peace come so that we can go back to our homes and children can go back to their schools.”

A youth leader at the POC site, Peter John, said indeed the “future is blur for kids”.

Humanitarian agencies told the visiting UN Security Council’s delegation to Wau on Sunday that there are over 40,000 IDPs living south-west of the town and they have no access to food and medical services.
