The Deputy Governor of Upper Nile State emphasized the need for unity and peace during his visit to Nasir County this week.

Speaking during a meeting with traditional leaders and community members in Nasir town, Deng Joh Angok, urged both citizens and leadership to set aside differences and collaborate towards resolving security challenges in the region.

Angok emphasized the importance of unity in addressing security concerns and restoring peace in the region.

During the meeting, the community leaders and residents stressed the need for reconciliation and urged collective efforts to resolve ongoing conflicts and ensure lasting peace.

In his remarks, the deputy governor reaffirmed the army’s responsibility to protect the region, secure its citizens, and assist the county commissioner in maintaining order.

“The army is responsible for protecting the region from security threats, as well as safeguarding citizens and their property,” the Deputy Governor stated.

“The security forces must assist the county commissioner and hold weekly meetings of the county security committee,” he added.

“We have found that there are issues that require us to put aside differences and focus on finding solutions. These methods are our responsibility as the leadership of the state, and we have urged the people here to work together for peace.”

In October 2024, about 17 people were killed during heavy fighting between armed civilians and the SSSPDF in Nasir town.

The incident, which resulted in casualties on both the civilian and militant sides, erupted around 3 p.m. and lasted for four hours.

Since the formation of the unity government following the 2018 peace agreement, Nasir County has faced ongoing clashes between the White Army and the SSPDF stationed in Nasir town, resulting in the deaths of both soldiers and civilians.
