The Minister of Defense has preemptively warned South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) officers against selling food supplies donated by President Salva Kiir, stating that those caught will be held accountable.
Gen. Chol Thon Balok made the order while addressing troops at the Army Headquarters in Bilpam on Monday, ahead of an expected arrival of 200 trucks loaded with food supplies from Uganda.
He said 40 trucks have arrived so far, with 30 more expected in the coming days.
“We do not want to see an officer or a non-commissioned officer selling these food supplies in the market. If you are caught selling these supplies, you will be held accountable,” Balok said.
“These goods were donated to us by President Kiir from his office to help the army. Our goal is to obtain 200 trucks loaded with food supplies that have come via Uganda.”
It is not clear if the advance warning was issued because army officers previously sold such food consignments.
On his part, Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), Gen. Dr. Paul Nang Majok reaffirmed that the 40 trucks contain various essential supplies, with an additional 30 trucks arriving through Nimule.
“Basically, we are receiving 40 trucks of different items. Subsequently we will be receiving another 30 which are receiving Nimule to bring the total to 70 and the process is going to continue. Every month, we will be receiving a quantity more than this.”
He also confirmed that in Northern Upper Nile, the army has received 10,000 bags of sorghum, each weighing 90 kilograms.
