Cueibet restricts movements of cattle

Lakes State’s Cueibet County commissioner has issued an order banning movement of cattle in and around farmlands.

Mayom Malek says the ban is to ensure that crops are not destroyed by livestock.

It followed a meeting with cattle keepers and crop farmers. Mr Malek told Eye Radio that crop farming should be the main economic activity of the county.

“Those who are actually suffering from hunger cultivated this year. Therefore, there is no need for cattle owners to leave their cattle to areas of farming,” he told Eye Radio.

Mr Mayom says there is a committee to follow up the implementation of the order and those who violate the order will be tried before local courts.

“There are village committees who are actually responsible for that to make sure the cattle dod not enter anybody’s farm,” he added.

Mr Mayo says there is fear of severe hunger before the harvests this year.
