UN condemns increased violence

The UN Mission in South Sudan has condemned the rise of violence, which it says has left many civilian dead and others injured in Juba, Wau, and Bentiu over the course of the week.

In Wau, UNMISS says there was shooting yesterday in the southern part, including Jebel Rabi, Lokolo and Bushere suburbs, just two weeks after va separate violence that displaced thousands of people.

In the latest incident, UNMISS says about three hundred people fled to its base in the town.

In Bentiu, it says its base was shot at this week but there were no casualties.

“Firing in the direction of the place, peacekeepers responded by returning fire,” said Shantal Persuad, UNMISS acting-Spokesperson.

The head of the mission, Ellen Margrethe Loej, has urged all parties to cease from engaging in violence and to focus on the implementation of the peace agreement.

Ms Shantal also says a senior UN agency official was injured in a shooting incident in Tong Piny suburb in Juba last evening. She did not name the official but said he was under treatment.
