South Sudan Council of Churches (SSCC) is calling on the South Sudan government, regional and international community to hold Khartoum accountable for the killing of South Sudanese Nationals in Wad Madani.
After the strategic city was recaptured by the army on 11th January 2025, chilling footages were published on social media of dead South Sudanese nationals in civilian clothes. A young man also appears pressed down and his throat slit on camera as soldiers shout “Allahu Akbar” (God is Great).
The atrocities blamed the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) under Gen. Abdel Fattah Al Burhan – raised concern about the safety of thousands of South Sudanese nationals who are stranded in the war-torn neighboring country.
In South Sudan, angry youth attacked a number of Sudanese-owned shops in markets in Juba and Aweil between Thursday and Friday in an apparent reprisal for the incident.
Calm has since returned to Juba and other cities after the government declared a dusk to dawn curfew aimed at limiting late gatherings that contributed to the night-time thefts.
In a joint media briefing on January 21, SSCC reiterated its voice in condemning the killings, and urged Juba and the international community to take swift action to protect civilians and bring perpetrators to justice.
Bishop James Lado Emiliano, the General Overseer of Sudan Pentecostal Church read out a joint statement.
“We, the church leaders, call upon the government of South Sudan, the regional and international community to hold the government of Sudan accountable and demand swift action to protect civilians and bring perpetrators to justice without delay.”
“….and further ensure that all forms of atrocities including the extrajudicial killing and human rights violations are never repeated. We appeal to the government of South Sudan to take its responsibility in facilitating the safe return of citizens in Sudan and elsewhere to the country.”
The clergies expressed solidarity with the grieved families whose dear ones got killed in the war- tone Sudan.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat has condemned and called for justice in the incident in Wad Madani and urged the Sudan government to fully investigate the “heinous crime.”
