Chinese peacekeepers arrive in Wau

Author : | Published: Wednesday, October 12, 2016

Three hundred Chinese peacekeeping troops serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan have reached their mission area in Wau town.

This development comes after months of insecurity which has seen hundreds of thousands people displaced in the area.

The Chinese state-owned television on Tuesday reported that the troops were consisting of engineers and medical teams.

The engineers will build infrastructure facilities and do maintenance for barracks and defensive shelters of UN peacekeeping forces, while the medical unit will mainly provide basic services for peacekeeping troops.

The report also says China has started shipping materials for its first peacekeeping helicopter unit, from its northern port of Tianjin.

The materials will be transported through Port Sudan and will arrive in South Sudan early next year.

It says 140 soldiers, including four helicopters, will be deployed as part of the peacekeeping mission in the country.

Their duties will include transporting peacekeepers, conducting post-rescue evacuation and logistics supply, among others.

The Chinese televisions also quoted the state Defense Ministry’s response to the CIVIC report, that the Chinese peacekeepers abandoned their posts during the July incident in Juba, as saying ‘a malicious speculation’.

Chang Wanguan said China’s peacekeeping forces only carried out the instructions of the U.N. mission in a responsible manner and did its best to guarantee the safety of civilians and other peacekeepers.
