The Chinese Embassy in Juba on Monday congratulated South Sudan after they beat China 89:69 in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

In a statement published on its official Facebook page, the Embassy sent its best wishes to both nations for a “great match” shortly after the match ended.

“Congratulations to South Sudan on 89:69 winning China in the group play of the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Thanks to the players of both teams for the great match and good luck to them in the upcoming matches,” the statement reads.

The Dragons went down 89-69 to South Sudan in Manila for their second defeat of the tournament, following an opening-day thrashing by Serbia.

China has struggled for many years – even at the continental level – and the federation brought in a big name in head coach Aleksandar Djordjevic to try to change the direction of the team.

But their hope of making it to the next round is now hanging by a thread, and they must now beat Puerto Rico in their final game and also hope the results go their way to avoid a first round exit.

Meanwhile, South Sudan are also faced with an uncertain situation despite the China win.

On August 30, the Bright Stars will play a must-win match against Serbia, who currently sit top of Group B and are ranked number 8 by FIBA.
