UN chief calls for an end to violence against girls

Author : | Published: October 12, 2014

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has called for an end to violence against girls.

He says many adolescent girls are beaten, raped or even murdered in the world due to a culture of impunity from family members, partners and teachers who violate the rights of the girl-child.

He says girls must be equipped with knowledge, resources and power to determine their own path in life.

Mr Ban Ki-Moon made the remarks in a statement to mark the International Day of the Girl-child, which is celebrated on the 11th of October to recognize girls’ rights and highlight the challenges girls face worldwide.

This year focuses on “empowering adolescent girls: ending the cycle of violence.”
