‘You cannot leave Addis Ababa without peace’

The 17th of August is the last chance for the warring parties to sign a peace deal, IGAD has warned.

The IGAD-Plus expanded mediation team the rivals will face consequences should they fail.

This warning came following a meeting of the members of the team with international envoys on Thursday. They discussed challenges faced over the past 10 days of the negotiations.

“I have to put the necessary pressure to see for themselves that an end to the war, to the killing, IGAD-Chief Mediator Ambassador Seyoum Mesfin told the media in Addis Ababa.

“But this time, it is not only IGAD that is saying it; it is the whole world that is saying it. Beyond that nobody is saying that they will have a second chance. They have heard it now from the mouths of the entire IGAD-Plus that 17th of August is the last chance.”

Amb Mesfin cautioned that the delegates will not be allowed to leave Addis Ababa if they don’t sign a peace deal next Monday the 17th of August.

“You cannot leave Addis Ababa this time without signing peace agreement by the 17th of August,” he stated.

“This is not one of the previous days; enough is enough. It’s frustration and hopelessness. It is raining in South Sudan and all over the world. There is no any other chance.”

He said President Salva Kiir is expected to arrive in Addis Ababa this morning in order to engage in negotiations with the leader of the SPLM-SPLA In Opposition, Dr. Riek Machar in order to reach compromise over the contentious issues.
