CEPO urges IGAD to stop Sudan-Uganda cold war in South Sudan

Author : | Published: Wednesday, July 15, 2015

The civil society group, Community Empowerment for Progress Organization has called on IGAD to stop Uganda and Sudan from fueling the South Sudan conflict.

Uganda sent it troops to Juba after the outbreak of the conflict in December 2013, while Sudan is being accused of supporting the SPLM in Opposition.

Executive Director, Edmond Yakani says IGAD must work closely with people of South Sudan by providing them with information concerning peace talks in Addis Ababa.

He said: “As citizens, IGAD needs to justify to us in the next round of the mediation; do they have the leadership responsibility to tell the countries which are using the space in South Sudan for proxy war? Like Bashir in Sudan, President Museveni in Uganda.”

“IGAD have their strength to tell them very clear that don’t use South Sudan for proxy war.”

Mr Edmond says IGAD should let people understand the new approach known as the IGAD plus, in which five African countries and representatives from the UN and the African Union have joined the mediation.

The next round of peace talks is expected to resume after the Holy month of Ramadhan next week.
