Ceasefire monitors seek refuge at UN Torit base

The Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangement Monitoring Mechanism says its team members in Torit in Imatong State have sought protection at the UNMISS compound.

This came after their leader was arrested and detained in Torit town on Tuesday.

On Thursday, the CTSAMM said series of impediment and restrictions, harassment and intimidation against its members occurred, despite strong calls for unhindered access.

It added that without freedom of movement of its unnamed staff, CTSAMM will not be able to serve the interests of the people of South Sudan.

The Strategic Communication Officer of CTSAMM reiterated calls for the release of their leader in Torit.

Ruth Feeny said the other CTSAMM members are currently residing in the UNMISS compound in Torit due to fear of arrest.

“They are unable to leave the compound to carry out activities due to the threat of arrest,” Ms Feeney told Eye Radio.

She added that “our team leader is still under arrest in Torit”.
