Govt, IO forces ‘blocking’ Morobo-Yei road, says MP

An MP representing Morobo county at the national legislative assembly has called on government and opposition forces to remove road blocks along the way to allow free movement of people.

Honorable, Janet Ayaa Alex told Eye Radio that people who are returning to their homes from the refugee camps are finding it difficult due to the road blocks.

“The road blocks is another kind of insecurity, and on these road blocks when you go, you pay. So it’s make movement very difficult.”

Ms Ayaa who just returned to Juba from Morobo town, said there is also harassment of travelers on the road.

“There is little a bit of harassment on these road blocks, so I think these road blocks should be removed.”

She said removing the road blocks is important for confidence-building among the citizens, especially for the returnees.

“Let the people start moving to build confidence. If we don’t allow free movements, you know there will be not confidence and therefore, the return of people will be difficult.”

Ms Ayaa called for cantonment of all the forces.

“Our soldiers should be in their locations whether the called small barracks or cantonment, or whatever, and get organized,” she said

Morobo County is one of the counties affected by the conflict is Yei River state since the beginning of the conflict in 2016.

Dr Riek Machar returns to Khartoum

The Chairman of the SPLM-IO has returned to Khartoum from Italy, where he was stranded for days after the toppling of Omar al-Bashir.

Dr. Riek Machar left Khartoum for the Vatican a day before long time ruler was ousted.

He went there to take part in the spiritual retreat hosted by Pope Francis at his Santa Marta residence.

But the protests, which began in December, last year, intensified forcing the army to seize power from Omar al-Bashir – who had clung to it for 30 years.

This, officials said, made it impossible for the main opposition leader to immediately return to Khartoum, where he is being hosted till his expected return to Juba to resume his old seat as the first vice president.

A senior member of the SPLM-IO leadership – Agok Makur told Eye Radio that Dr Machar arrived in Khartoum on Wednesday:

[It] is important for him to return back to Khartoum as the place where he was, and [he] will wait the process of the pre-transitional period which is still going on,” he said.

“As you know there are some obstacles facing the implementation of the agreement and specifically the security arrangements,” said Mr Makur.

3000 opposition & SSPDF troops receiving training in Yei River

The deputy chief of defense says the army is training 3,000 soldiers in line with the new peace agreement.

The revitalized peace agreement calls for security reforms.

Previous reports indicate that most soldiers are untrained, illiterate, loyal to individual generals, and controlled by political leaders.

Besides, the army is often accused of committing human rights abuses, including rape and targeted killing.

“We are not scientifically going to this percentage that has been allowed in the agreement. We are not renegotiating,” said General Johnson Juma Okot, at a meeting of the strategic Defense and Security Review board.

General Okot, who is also a member of the mechanism, said the soldiers are being trained in Yei River State:

“We say for confidence building IO bring 1500, SSPDF bring 1500. We are training them in Morobo for a confidence building,” he said.
