Ayod residents live in fear of attacks – Valerie Amos

Author : | Published: Monday, February 9, 2015

The United Nations says people in Ayod County in Jonglei State are living in fear of further attacks.

The Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs says people in Ayod have been displaced several times since the conflict started more than a year ago.

After a visit to the county, Valery Amos says the people urgently need peace.

“People are desperate for peace and they are tired of living in fear. Many had had to flee several times. They have to leave their homes and went elsewhere and then had to flee again,” she said.

“They were exhausted.  They lack water. They are extremely worried for their children. And they are also worried that their children are in risk of being recruited into armed groups; sexual violence is on the rise. All the people we spoke to want to live in safety, security and stability.”

Ms Valerie says a generation of children could be lost if the conflict continues.
